Vaginal Smell

  • A woman's vagina normally produces a discharge that usually is described as clear or slightly cloudy, non-irritating, and vaginal smell free. During the normal menstrual cycle, the amount and consistency of discharge can vary. At one time of the month there may be a small amount of a very thin or watery discharge; and at another time, a more extensive thicker discharge may appear. All of these descriptions could be considered normal.

    A vaginal discharge that has an vaginal smell or that is irritating usually is considered an abnormal discharge. The irritation might be itching or burning, or both. The itching may be present at any time of the day, but it often is most bothersome at night. These symptoms often are made worse by sexual intercourse. It is important to see your doctor if there has been a change in the amount, color, or vaginal smell of the discharge.

    Common symptoms of vaginal infection include:

    * Increase or change in vaginal discharge, including gray, green, or yellow colored discharge. See what is normal vaginal discharge?

    * Vaginal or genital redness and swelling.

    * Vaginal or genital itching.

    * Vaginal or genital pain.

    * Vaginal smell.

    * Burning with urination.

    * Pain or bleeding with sexual intercourse.

    Any young girl with unusual vaginal symptoms should be evaluated by her health professional to determine the cause and assess for possible sexual abuse.

    Any pregnant woman with vaginal symptoms should talk with her health professional about her symptoms before considering any home treatment measures. Some home treatment measures may not be appropriate, depending on the cause of the vaginal infection. Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis can affect the pregnancy or harm the developing fetus, so it is important to talk with your health professional and be treated appropriately.

    Treatment depends on the cause of your vaginal infection and the severity of your vaginal smell symptoms.
